The difference is that you can experience the vast majority of everything
WoW has to offer merely by playing solo or with pick-up groups. Sure, you
might not see some of the high-end raid content that way but that's not the
core of the game.
In Eve, on the other hand, you basically can't get out of the newbie area
(high-sec space) without the protection and bankrolling of a large,
established corp. It's difficult to start your own corp even in high-sec
space without the backing of a larger patron corp because other corps can
unilaterally declare war on you. In short, in Eve you either make friends
with established players or you don't play. That's awesome if you're on the
inside but it's tough if you're a new player.
