Yes, I think these cultural differences are quite interesting, but
there are other factors that come into play too. Such as the
environment.
For instance, in Norway we have many narrow roads that make lots of
twists and turns. When I drive in Florida with long straight roads I
feel like I am standing still. What makes it worse is that the speed
signs read "55" and "65" which is rather slow if you think about it
as "km/h" rather than "mph" . The combination of the straight roads
of the low numbers drives forth an urge in me to get the numbers up
to at least "80" or "90"... I am usually a careful driver with lots
of cars behind me...
(My grandfather actually forgot that his car had a British
speed-o-meter once. He realized when the police stopped him...)
To complicate things further: a norwegian "mil" = 10 km... So when I
read "2 miles walking distance" my first thought is "oh that's a
pretty long walk", then "duh, it is only 0.3 mil".
